Day 66 Â Peking

A Day in Beijing: Temples, Traffic, and Surprises
On 4th September, we took our ID. Buzz for a drive through Beijing, weaving between gleaming skyscrapers and into quieter corners where picturesque little temples still pop up—rare gems in the city’s modern sprawl.
With the heat climbing to almost 32 degrees, we found ourselves overtaken by scores of motor scooters. Oddly enough, their riders were wrapped up as if winter had arrived, layered in gear that looked ready for minus ten. It turns out these aren’t meant for warmth—they’re special airbag suits designed to offer protection in case of accidents, all while staying breathable for Beijing’s sultry summers.
Later, our day took a tasty detour when we bumped into a fellow German at “Punk Rock Noodle,” a local spot especially popular with expats. Over noodles, we shared our route and traded travel stories—a brief, lively exchange that turned out to be the highlight of the day.
Evening brought another fun surprise: a vintage T2 bus driver, who’d been tracking us via the GPS map on our homepage, suddenly turned up to show off his own classic ride. Swapping stories about road trips and old buses made for a great boost as night settled over the city.
On the way back to the hotel, we battled the inevitable Beijing traffic. At every corner, those massive trucks—hauling dozens of bright yellow rental bikes—worked tirelessly to restock stations for the next wave of city riders.
All in all, it was a day full of big city energy, quirky encounters, and the unique blend of tradition and innovation that keeps Beijing fascinating.
Now, we set our sights south: Shanghai, then onward to Hong Kong. The journey rolls on.
Next stop: Shanghai!
