Shanghai Arrival: Icons, Encounters, and Urban Spectacle

The closer we got to our second milestone—Shanghai—the greater our anticipation became. Our routine visits to Volkswagen dealerships blurred into one another, each marked by a familiar rhythm: friendly staff, snapshot ceremonies, and similar photographs.

On entering Shanghai, the scale of the metropolis was truly striking. A city of 25 million, we were guided by an immaculate traffic system layered across different levels of the motorway, leading us unerringly to the legendary riverside promenade, The Bund. There, with the shimmering Huangpu River at our feet and the city’s colonial and futuristic skylines rising above, we were welcomed by our sponsor Giti for a meeting with a KOL—a “Key Opinion Leader”, as influencers are called here in China.

There was real excitement surrounding our all-electric ID. Buzz’s journey. Shanghai’s night skyline, viewed from a sleek rooftop terrace, was an undisputed highlight—neon towers reflected in the dark waters, competing for attention with the city below.

The next day, we made our way to SAIC, Volkswagen’s joint venture partner, to present our tour and the ID. Buzz once again. There we also came across a special gem: a pristine 1984 VW Santana with WOB license plates – a valuable gift that had once come here from Wolfsburg. This tangible piece of automotive history stood side by side with our high-tech car, bridging the gap between generations of engineering excellence.

Before leaving, we snatched a few last photographs of Shanghai’s iconic skyline—its silhouette both familiar and endlessly fascinating.
